Citizens Of HRM Continue To Support The Division Of The Municipality

March 27, 2009

HALIFAX:  Support for splitting HRM into two municipal units has been consistent over the past three years, with the majority of citizens in support, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates, Inc.  One-half (51%, down from 54% in November 2008) of HRM residents support dividing the municipality into two units, one to serve rural residents and one to serve urban residents, while just over one-third oppose (36%, compared with 35%) and a small number (13%, compared with 12%) did not offer a response.

Support for the division of HRM is strongest in the urban areas of the municipality, (53% in Halifax and Dartmouth, compared with 49% in Bedford/Sackville and 46% in the remaining areas of HRM).

“There continues to be problems with the current governance model which does not serve the diverse needs of either the rural or urban residents of the municipality” according to Don Mills, President and CEO of CRA.

These results are part of the CRA Halifax Urban Report, an independent survey of Halifax Regional Municipality residents. The results are based on a sample of 407 adult residents (18 years plus), conducted from February 3 to February 17, 2009, with results accurate to within +4.9 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.

For more information, please contact: Don Mills, President and CEO at (902) 722-3100.

As you may or may not know, since the HRM amalgamation, Nova Scotia no longer has a capital city.  Do you support or oppose splitting HRM into two municipal units, one for rural residents called the County of Halifax and one for urban residents, called the City of Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia?
