HALIFAX:  The opposition Liberals and ruling Progressive Conservatives remain virtually tied in terms of voter support, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc.  Presently, the PCs are preferred by 48 percent of decided voters (compared with 43% in November 2006), with the Liberals garnering 44 percent support (compared with 45%).  Six percent of Islanders prefer the Island New Democrats (compared with 8%), and 2 percent back the Green Party (compared with 4% in November 2006). The number of residents who are undecided, refuse to state a preference, or do not plan to vote currently stands at 40 percent (compared with 35% three months ago).

Satisfaction with the performance of the Progressive Conservative government is stable compared with three months ago.  Presently, six in ten (60%, compared with 63% in November 2006) Island residents are satisfied with the overall performance of the provincial government.  Three in ten (31%, compared with 33%) are mostly or completely dissatisfied with the government’s performance.  The number of residents with no definite opinion on this matter has increased by 5 percentage points to 9 percent. 

The personal popularity of the leaders of the Liberal and PC parties is also stable compared with November 2006 results, and PC leader Pat Binns remains ahead of Liberal leader Robert Ghiz.  Presently, PC leader Pat Binns garners the support of four in ten (38%, compared with 40%) Island residents, while Liberal leader Robert Ghiz is preferred by three ten (30%, compared with 32%) Islanders.  Five percent of residents favour NDP leader Dean Constable (compared with 4% three months ago).  Seven percent (compared with 5%) prefer none of these leaders or select others, while two in ten (19%, compared with 18%) are undecided at this time. 

These results are part of the CRA Atlantic Quarterly, an independent survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a sample of 300 Prince Edward Islanders, conducted from February 13 to February 28, 2007, with results accurate to within +5.7 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
