SAINT JOHN: Support for the ruling Liberals is stable compared with three months ago, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc. Presently, one-half (49%, compared with 51% in May 2008) of decided voters back the Liberals, with one-third (34%, compared with 36%) supporting the PCs.  Support for the NDP increased slightly this quarter (14% compared with 11%) and has doubled since August 2007. Four percent (compared with 2%) of decided voters prefer the Green Party.  The number of New Brunswick residents who are undecided, do not plan to vote, or refuse to state a preference currently stands at 48 percent (compared with 44% in May 2008).

Liberal leader Shawn Graham’s popularity is also stable this quarter. Presently, just under four in ten (37%, compared with 38% in May 2008) residents prefer Graham for Premier.  Backing for the next leader of the Progressive Conservatives stands at 18 percent (down from 23%), while backing for Roger Duguay of the NDP increased slightly to 10 percent (up from 7%).  The next leader of the Green Party is preferred by three percent (compared with 4%). Seven percent (up one percentage point) of New Brunswickers like none of these leaders or prefer others.  The number of residents who do not offer a definite opinion increased slightly and currently stands at 25 percent (compared with 22%).
 
Satisfaction with the performance of the Liberal government declined to its May 2007 level (53%, down from 59% in May 2008). Consequently, dissatisfaction increased, and currently stands at 37% (up from 34%).  The remaining 10 percent (compared with 7%) do not offer a definite opinion at this time.

These results are part of the CRA Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a sample of 1207 adult New Brunswickers, conducted from August 5 to August 29, 2008, with results accurate to within +2.8 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
